With the rapid development of computers and technology, graphic design and animation has become the modern avatar of the visual arts. The mouse has replaced the brush and the palette, and all kinds of colors, textures, shapes and images are now visualized and created on the computer screen.

Graphic designers create visual solutions to communication problems. Using a combination of illustrations, photography, animation, text, and layouts, graphic designers create compelling ways of getting a message across in print, electronic, and film media. Among the five design occupations, graphic designers are expected to have the most new jobs through 2014. However, competition is keen, and most employers prefer people with formal education in graphic design. A bachelor’s degree in graphic design is required for most entry-level positions. However, an associate degree may be sufficient for technical positions.

Several institutes offer animation and graphic design degrees. Examples are The New England Institute of Art, Capella University, Westwood College, etc. An online graphic design degree is also a good option for people who are unable to take full-time courses. The Art Institute Online, Ashworth College Online, and the Westwood College Online are some examples of institutes offering an online degree in graphic design.

In addition, students are given training in general management, business law, logical and analytical thinking, and communications, to help them make informed decisions about career paths.

Animation is one of the most popular specializations in graphic design, and separate courses for an animation degree are also available. Westwood College Online, Kaplan University, Academy of Art University, and the Rasmussen College are examples of institutes that offer an animation degree online.

Graduates holding graphic design degrees can get started with entry-level positions advertising and related services, printing and related support activities, and newspaper, book, journal and directory publishers. They can also get employment with computer systems design firms producing computer graphics. A small number of graphic designers also work with engineering, scientific and technical, and management consulting companies. 3 out of 10 graphic designers do freelance work or are self-employed. Entry-level designers earned a median annual salary of $32, 000 in 2005. However, with talent, experience, and rise in responsibilities, compensations can go beyond $100,000.
