A Distance Learning Bachelors Degree Can Open Doors

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

When life has to go on while college classes are taken, turning to the Internet can really help. A distance learning bachelors degree can open doors while allowing students to matriculate on their own schedules.

Distance learning bachelors degree programs used to only be offered in a few fields and by a few “select,” unknown institutions. That is simply not the case anymore. Students interested in earning this very important, employment-benefiting degree will soon find there are plenty of options out there now. There’s no reason to expect to have to go to class all the time to earn a valuable bachelors degree.

Distance learning, for those who are unclear, involves college classes that are taken over the Internet. Books might be mailed to a students’ door and access to professors is also still generally available via chat, forums, telephone or in person, but the bulk or all of the material is handled online. The type of programs available for full degrees will vary. Some of the most common include such areas of concentration as business and accounting, education and criminal justice, and history and theology. (more…)

What To Expect With Distance Learning Courses

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Distance learning courses can be a wonderful way for anyone with a computer and Internet to pursue a higher degree. These classes are now offered by a variety of different institutions and really cover the gamut as far as study area is concerned.

But, what can students really expect to get out of distance learning courses?

The answer to that is a lot! If the idea is that distance learning is a “free ride,” an easy way to go or a snap to finish, get that out of the head right now. The truth is many of these courses are as difficult and challenging as their classroom counterparts and some are even more so.

Students who sign on for distance learning courses will find they are typically handled quite a bit differently than classes attended in person, but that doesn’t mean the course requirements are slack. The reality is for accreditation to extend to these classes, professors and students have to walk a very fine line to ensure the teaching is quality and the learning is, too. (more…)

Why Choose an Online College?

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Since the very recent dawning of online learning at the college level, the stigma of an education with less merit than what can be gained through attending a traditional campus has been ever present. While that stigma has subsided over the years, there are still persistent questions as to the effectiveness of online learning. All things being equal in terms of tuition, is it really possible to get an online education that rivals a campus based education in both the knowledge gained and the inherent value of what it can do for a resume?

The first thing to note is that rarely are all things equal, and tuition is no exception. Despite the fact that there are no athletic programs to support through added tuition fees and no property maintenance costs, some online colleges and universities are astoundingly more expensive than attending a state run college. Simple economics dictates that this shouldn’t be the case. Fortunately, the majority of accredited distance learning colleges and universities in operation today offer tuition rates well below those found at state run universities. Still, the point remains, students considering an online education need to shop around. (more…)

ADD: Getting Through College With The Least Stress

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Many people with ADD find it very difficult to stick to a four-year program at college and to get their degrees. College can be hard for anyone when there are 5 papers due all on the same day. But you have the added handicap of being easily bored and quickly finding distraction. So, though it’s no cakewalk for any college student, getting your degree can be particularly hard when you have ADD.

How can that be helped?

Find a school that will work with you and your ADD. Most colleges require 15 credits to be classified as a full-time student, but most will also allow you to take fewer credits, though you’ll only be classified as part-time. If this isn’t a tax issue for you or your parents, being a part-time student with fewer classes to worry about may be a solution for you. (more…)

The Importance of Choosing the Right College Major for Working Adults

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Choosing a college major can be a major pain in the neck, especially for working adults attempting to redirect their careers. While new students who haven’t incurred the responsibilities of life in full force may have the luxury of changing direction several times throughout their academic journey, working adults have a different set of priorities when it comes to education.

Most working adults must balance the commitments of family, their current jobs and in some cases, second jobs all while attempting to better themselves with the little remaining time available. For this reason, choosing a major is an often arduous task. For starters, few working adults have the time to properly research the best available options. Campus based colleges and universities have academic advisors who can help in this regard, but making an appointment to visit one can require multiple phone calls and a scheduled meeting time that is likely to interfere with a standard work schedule. Online colleges and universities are superior in this regard because they are geared toward working adults and offer academic advisors outside normal business hours. (more…)
