Aviation Training with Computer Based Training (CBT)

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007
aviation.jpg The growth and maturity of CBT industry has been closely associated with computer based simulation for pilot training in aviation industry. Aviation CBT continues to demonstrate the new technology advance in CBT design and implementation though CBT is now widely adopted in education and corporate training.

The Aviation Industry Computer-Based Training Committee (AICC) oversees and develops guidelines for aviation CBT in the design, development, delivery of training programs.

Although many aviation training schools use CBT, they actually are starting to add it into the actual flying. Pilots have to fly a simulated airplane in order to grasp the important maneuvers before going into the air. With CBT in every school, pilots do not have to feel anxious about what they have learned. By practicing and seeing results just through this type of aviation training, chances are they will succeed at a faster rate!

While there are different types of pilot lessons, recreational aviation clients can also benefit from this type of CBT. After all, learning about aviation supplies, and memorizing these aircraft supplies is only so exciting. By pretending you are in a real airplane, complete with david clark headsets, you can consume a greater amount of information when it is simulated. A hand on experience has always worked best with pilots, especially when they know that the real thing is much more important than a piece of paper. CBT changes perspectives and provides realistic information in a different light. (more…)

Cost of College a Bipartisan Concern

Monday, November 12th, 2007
bankrupt.jpg Congressional Republicans have been making known for years their concern about the rapidly escalating tuitions that colleges are charging. Higher education leaders have held out hope that Democratic lawmakers, now that they control Congress, would be more sympathetic to their arguments that the price increases are justified — or at least that colleges should be left to fix the problem on their own, without federal intervention.

That hope was largely dashed Friday, when the leaders of the House Education and Labor Committee released a long-awaited bill to extend the Higher Education Act. The massive 747-page legislation is a hodgepodge of proposals touching on a remarkably wide array of issues — student loan ethics, financial aid simplification, accreditation, help for students with disabilities, and the like.

But perhaps its most striking features are that it reveals clearly (1) that Congressional Democrats are as frustrated by the price of college as their Republican counterparts, and (2) that Democratic lawmakers are, like their Republican peers and the Bush administration, willing to expand the federal role in higher education, not only in the college cost arena but into such areas as textbook prices and technology policies. Online Degrees Give Stay-at-Home Moms A Way to Prepare For Workplace Re-Entry

Friday, November 9th, 2007
stay_home_mom.jpg Jennifer Cartwright worked for a Fortune 100 company for seven years. She loved her job. While many of her co-workers burned out in the high-pressure environment, Jennifer thrived. She was on her way up, and it looked like nothing could stop her.

Then she got pregnant.

“I hated to give up my job,” Jennifer says. “But there was no way to scale back my time at the office—it was all or nothing. And even though I loved it, I ultimately decided my baby needed me more than I needed to stay at work.”

Fast-forward a few years. Jennifer’s son, Alan, was now old enough to go to pre-school, and Jennifer wants to go back to work. But she still had a hard time finding a high-profile, high-pressure position like the one she left. Most of the employers who asked for interviews were offering considerably scaled-back positions at much lower pay scales, with little opportunity for advancement. (more…)

college_costs.jpg Paying for college has become increasingly more difficult, as the college tuition fees have increased faster than the rise of inflation. At the same time financial aids from traditional sources such as federal government and the schools have dwindled. In order to find the free money to fund you college study, you need to take the initiative to search out the scholarships for which you are well qualified. Online Education Celebration!

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007
fireworks.jpg An educator puts his twist on an idea for a national celebration.
It all began with a soft pretzel.

Ken Hartman was reading the newspaper when a small blurb - an advertisement for National Pretzel Day - grabbed his attention.Hartman, who is both academic director of Drexel e-Learning and a member of the Cherry Hill school board, was thunderstruck.

“If someone could celebrate Pretzel Day, why isn’t there a day to celebrate the tremendous growth in education in online learning?” Hartman said.

Hartman, an enthusiastic dynamo who has written books about and appeared on television programs discussing the intersection of education and the Web, got to work quickly.

Forget National Online Learning Day. Hartman, who’s worked as a university professor and administrator for 25 years, conceived, coordinated, and got National Distance Learning Week on the map. The nonprofit United States Distance Learning Association even named him chairman of the celebration.

Beginning Monday, schools and universities around the country will mark the occasion with virtual open houses, awards and a series of free “webinars” - seminars available on the Web.

It’s a chance to highlight a fast-growing part of the education sector. (more…)

Sound Design - Job Functions and Career Paths

Friday, November 2nd, 2007
sound_design.jpg Sound designers are audio professionals responsible for everything an audience hears whether in live performances, film, television, radio or music recordings. They rely on their in-depth knowledge of acoustics, sound reproduction systems, sound editing tools and sound reinforcement techniques to give artistic direction, create sound effects and musical soundtracks.

They are used in the design of new facilities and are brought onboard during the post-production stage of a film to create a sound effect or soundtracks that will manipulate and/orenhance the narrative and thematic needs of the film. In theaters, the sound designer develops the soundrequirements of each new production, in much the same way as lighting designers.

The terms “engineer,” “technician” and “operator,” are often mistakenly interchanged. Part of the confusion may arise out of the project or event driven nature of the industry. A person may serve as a designer on one project, an engineer on another and an operator on still another. Engineers implement the sound design and define the technical conditions that must be met for the successful completion of a performance or an audio product. They also supervise the technicians and sound operators. Technicians run the wires for sound
in the theater and on the film set. Sound operators run the sound board during the theater performance. (more…)
