Scholarships are a great way to pay through college. There is myriad number of scholarships differing in type, amount, and the agency that issues the scholarship. What is common though is that you do not have to pay back a scholarship. This is what makes scholarships so attractive; along with grants they are indeed “free money” for college education. If you are looking for funding for your education then do get informed on the various scholarships out there and what the eligibility requirements for these are.

Scholarships are available through several entities and organizations. These include state and federal governments and private foundations as well. You should look for scholarships with employers, individuals, organizations, schools, churches and religious groups, associations, etc.

Scholarships may stress differing criteria including academic record, sports achievements, financial condition, full-time or part-time studies, religion, heritage, geographic location, compatibility with an organization’s ideals, etc.

Start looking for scholarships early; the usual period of applying for scholarships ranges from October to March. You may have to clear certain tests to become eligible for scholarship consideration. These tests may include writing an essay, an oral test, or completing a project to demonstrate your eligibility for the scholarship.

Focus your energies on trying to qualify for scholarships where you stand a chance to qualify based on their set criteria. Do not apply for each and every scholarship out there. Stay ahead of the deadlines, have all documents ready before time, and maybe you could consider sending the documents through a courier or certified mail so that you can get a delivered receipt. Be meticulous in your communication, ensure that there are no grammatical errors, typos, etc in your communication as these can cost you your scholarship.

The internet is a great resource to look up scholarships. You can search, compare, and then choose the ones best suited to your needs. However, be mindful of fake scholarship programs. There are many out there but all these red herrings have some warning signs. Most of these will send unsolicited emails to you stating that you have qualified for a scholarship and that only a few formalities stand between you and a hefty scholarship amount. Of course, there’s a small amount you need to pay for the formalities to be completed. If you come across points like these it should set the alarm bells ringing. Also remember that there is no such thing as a guaranteed scholarship; you have to qualify for it.
