5 Tips for Online Degree Seekers
| Earning an Online Degree is first choice for many adults. High school seniors many need a few years of living and learning with their peers but most adults do not. Still, there are a few things that face to face classes that most Online Degree programs can not. Here are some tips to help you get some extra mileage from your degree.
First, get to know your professors. Why? Teachers are no different from other people. They respond more positively to people they know. A little more attention can make a great difference in the learning process. Also, you never know when you may want a recommendation. |
You may be happily employed now but after you graduate, you may want to move up in the job world. Faculty write better letters of recommendation if they actual know and can remember a student.
Second, after you have bought the required texts for the course, get a second text by a different author on the same subject. Most often you can find these in the college or university library. If not, your local library may be able to get one through interlibrary loan. Why? Reading a second opinion is one of the fastest ways to broaden and deepen your grasp of a subject. Anyone wanting to learn more and get better grades will skim through several books on the course subject matter.
Third, read ahead. You will get more out of your online classes if you already have some familiarity with the subject matter to be presented. Research documents that the more you know about a subject, the easier it is to learn new things in the subject and the faster your grasp new information and integrate it with the rest of your knowledge.
Fourth, laugh. Kid around with your knowledge. Make cartoons, tell jokes, see the content of a course in absurd ways. Creating competing NASCAR vehicles decorated in the characteristics of different schools of thought and mentally letting them take off around the track will help your remember the details during test time. There was once a student who memorized a extensive set of details to Old MacDonald’s Had A Farm. He used to hum the turn under his breath whenever he got stuck. But he did remember it.
And finally, get to know some of the other students in your class - especially those living in foreign countries. As the world becomes more global it becomes more and more important to know, understand and appreciate cultures other than your own. Observe how students from other lands and cultures go about solving problems. Watch for the values they emphasize when problem solving. You will add to your skills. And who knows, someday that connection may pay off in a new job or promotion for you.
